Last May, the departments of Education and Justice issued joint guidance that directed schools to let transgender students use facilities that correspond with their gender identity. Wednesday night the Trump administration withdrew Obama-era protections for transgender students in public schools which let them use bathrooms and facilities corresponding with their gender identity.

Junior Savannah Saesan said, “I feel that’s a good thing because if an individual changes gender they should use the bathroom that corresponds with their gender. This protects others in cases where males might be in a female’s bathroom with bad intent.” Gender identity and bathroom situations were getting resolved under Obama but now Trump is withdrawing the protections.

“The billionaire said Thursday on the “Today” show on NBC that, “There have been very few complaints the way it is. People go, they use the bathroom that they feel is appropriate. There has been so little trouble, and the problem with what happened in North Carolina is the strife and the economic punishment that they’re taking. So I would say that’s probably the best way,” (CNN).

Sophomore Makayla McNett said, “I feel like if you go through the whole process and transition, you should be allowed to use the restroom of your choice, but if you just wake up one day and decide you want to change then you shouldn’t be able to just walk into the opposite sex bathroom.”

“In a one-and-a-half-page letter, the government unceremoniously retreated from a position — that transgender students may not be excluded from restrooms and locker rooms that match their gender identity — that the Department of Education had held for at least four years. Despite those years of experience, the government claims that it needs to “further and more completely consider the legal issues involved,” said NY Times.
