Recently makeup challenges have been going viral, and a lot of people do them for fun but a new challenge may shed some light on mental illnesses. Talking about mental illnesses is often avoided and criticized and for people who have mental illnesses they often find it difficult to express how the feel. Because people are so stand offish about this topic one makeup blogger found a new way to express these feelings.

“It’s cool because people can express how they really feel” said Silvia Metz.

The challenge asks people to express how they really feel or express some type of mental disorder through makeup they do not necessarily have to wear these looks out but they can if they want. Participants are supposed to do one half of their face in their everyday makeup look or any “normal” makeup look and they other they are supposed to express a mental disorder. Participants can also express how they feel on the topic of mental disorders or how other people view them. The challenge can hopefully teach others about these disorders so they understand them better, and help those who struggle with disorders not feel so alone, because people do not talk about their problems in fear of being judged they often feel alone.

“The challenge can help many people with their problems and also help others understand these type of problems” said Haley Bercosky.

The challenge was created by Yasaman Gheidi, a beauty guru on YouTube. She was inspired to create this challenge when she had an anxiety attack at an office holiday part for work. She had to leave early because of this and wondered what she would tell her coworkers. The next day going back to work she was very nervous about telling them what happened. She realized she should not be ashamed to tell her coworkers what happened and neither should anyone else who deals with problems like these. She wants people to accept themselves the way they are and not be ashamed of problems like mental disorders or any disorder. She hopes to help those who feel ashamed and show others who are hostel to the situation that they should not be because it’s completely normal.

“No one should be ashamed of their problems, it’s a part of life and to express that through art is admirable” said Herbert Smitley.

Not only is this challenge informative, it is artistic and unique. Makeup is a form of expression and is a form of art, so is the challenge in many ways. People are able to express how they feel with makeup and art in many ways but because it is so hard to talk about mental illnesses this is an easier way to express those feelings. People do not necessarily have to be good at art to do this challenge, because it is not for others, it is for themselves. It does not matter if other people like it as long as they like it and they have been able to express themselves it should not matter. It is their art work and their feelings and they should not be ashamed of either one. Mental disorders are nothing to be ashamed of and that is the main reason Ghedi created this challenge.

“So many wonderful and amazing people suffer from the same mental illnesses that I do on a daily basis. Why can’t we just talk about it openly?” said Ghedi.

In conclusion the Inside Out Makeup Challenge is for the participants to express how they feel by doing half of their face to express a felling and the other half just a “normal” face of makeup. The makeup challenge has gone viral and will hopefully spread even more to make talking about mental disorders easier. The challenge was created so people could express how they feel without being ashamed or judged for it.
