Success Versus Stress

Adults need to be reminded that high school students have a lot on their plate. Many teachers and adults believe that their students or children should do exactly as they are told when they are told. There is a difference between pushing a student to success and pushing a student over the line. Between juggling 8 classes, a social life, physical changes, and a home life, students have a lot to deal with. Ideally, eight hours of our day go to sleep, eight hours to school or work, and eight hours of free time. However, this is not so. With eight hours of school plus the few hours of homework we are given, students do not have a lot of “me-time”. So, to compensate for the extra time that they feel was wasted in school or on homework, students tend to stay up later, and they do not get the full eight hours of sleep. This is a bad habit to pick up because a lack of sleep can lead to many mental and physical health issues. Teachers need to remember that students have 7 additional classes and a life outside of school. As young adults and teenagers, we strive to reach perfection. However, different definitions of perfection are constantly pounded into teenager’s heads. Teachers tell us to strive for perfect grades, and society tells us to be well liked and have many friends. Parents tell their children to try to be successful at everything they do, but adults need to realize that sometimes we need a break, and sometimes they are putting too much on us as an attempt to push us towards their idea of success.
